There are no systems that are more critical to calibrate than others, but it is essential that all calibration criteria are strictly followed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, because driver assistance systems operate with millimeter-level tolerances, and even minimal errors can cause:

  • unexpected braking
  • failure to detect obstacles
  • lane deviation
  • incorrect safety distance calculations

What errors are most frequently encountered in workshops?

The most common errors involve incorrect positioning or fastening of cameras and radars, as well as improper use of calibration targets.

An additional complexity comes from platform sharing between different brands (for example, some Fiat models share platforms with Peugeot and Citroën; Suzuki uses Toyota panels; Mitsubishi adopts Renault solutions; Volvo uses Mercedes panels, etc.).

Without precise knowledge of technical specifications, it becomes easy to use unsuitable tools and compromise calibration.

How much does incorrect calibration affect safety and performance?

Incorrect calibration can have a significant impact on both vehicle safety and performance, especially in modern systems where electronics, sensors, and driver assistance are closely integrated.

It can compromise several systems, including:

  • automatic braking (late or unjustified activation)

  • lane keeping assist

  • adaptive cruise control (incorrect distance calculation)

  • less effective ABS and traction control

  • misaligned or unstable steering

How do manufacturers differentiate calibration processes?

They differ in methodology, level of automation, and product objectives.
Some rely more on physical testing and robustness, while others focus on data simulations and software updates, especially in next-generation and electric vehicles.

The main challenges include the increasing complexity of windshields, which requires more specialized skills, as well as the equipment available in workshops, which can affect the effectiveness of interventions.
